HEYFORD AMBLERS

The next Sunday walk will be on Sunday 15th April starting from Priors Marston at 10-30am. (Parking on the road opposite the bus shelter.)

We shall be walking about 5 miles in a round trip taking in the stunning Warwickshire scenery,

It’s quite an easy walk -  in fact downhill all the way after

the initial climb is completed.

We’ll continue walking on Tuesday mornings, meeting at the bus stop on the green at 10-30am. We don’t walk fast, we do about 3 or 4 miles, and we stop frequently to admire the view or to get our breath back. We are usually back in the village by 12-30. If you would like to join us, just turn up wearing sturdy footwear and give it a whirl.

Recipe of the Month – April

This month’s recipe was devised by the Good Housekeeping Institute for the Queens Coronation banquet.  Three hundred and fifty people attended the banquet but our recipe is for a more modest eight people.

Coronation chicken

  • 1 chicken about 1.6kg/3 and ½ lb
  • 2 celery sticks
  • 1 onion, peeled and chopped
  • 1 bouqet garni
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 125gm/5 oz dried apricot
  • 1 tsp oil
  • 2 shallots, peeled and finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp mild curry powder
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 100ml /3 fl oz red wine
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 lemon slices
  • 450ml/16 fl oz thick mayonnaise
  • 30ml/2 tbsp double cream
  • 1tbsp lemon juice
  • coriander to garnish

Method

Place chicken in pan with  the  celery, onion, bouquet garni, salt and peppercorns.  Pour in enough cold water to just cover the chicken thighs.  Cover, slowly bring to the boil and simmer for 1 hour.  Transfer chicken to a bowl, strain the stock and cool quickly.

Soak the apricots in boiling water.

Heat oil in a pan and fry the shallots for 1 minute.  Add curry powder, fry for 2/3 minutes.  Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute.  Add the wine, 100ml water, bay leaf, lemon slices, simmer for 15 minutes, then sieve.

Put apricots and soaking liquid in a pan.  Simmer for 15 minutes until soft, drain and puree.

Cut the chicken into strips discarding skin and bones.  Mix the mayonnaise with 3-4  tbsp curry sauce, 4-5  tbsp apricot puree, the cream and lemon juice.

Toss the chicken in some of the curry mayonnaise.  Garnish with the coriander sprigs and serve with the rest of the curry mayonnaise.

This recipe is the original one for the dish that was first served at the banquet.

HEYFORD PICTUREDROME at NETHER HEYFORD VILLAGE HALL

Another change of scene and pace at the Picturedrome on 15th March with the screening of A Man for All Seasons – as might be expected with a cast of distinguished actors, the film, although almost 50 years old, provided the audience with a first class evening’s entertainment.

The basic theme of the story of Thomas More is well known but the Director brought it to life with realistic scenes and settings, even though there were a few instances of ‘artistic licence’.

A most enjoyable two hour long film which kept the audience in their seats with no noticeable signs of discomfort,

Next month on Thursday 19th April the Picturedrome will be showing a lighthearted film – Chocolat – which tells the story of a single mother and her six year old daughter moving to a small rural town in France and opening a chocolate shop – with Sunday opening hours.   Their shop is across the street from the local church and its opening is met with open hostility by the local townspeople.   But as soon as they are coaxed into enjoying the shop’s delicious products, there is a change of attitude.

CHOCOLAT (12)

The film stars Juliette Binoche with parts for Johnny Depp, Judi Dench, Lesley Caron and many other well known actors (but no Maggie Smith!)

Usual times apply:           7.30pm for tea or coffee

8.00pm for the film show

Admission:                       £4 Adults and £2 Children under 16

Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul

Midweek Communions are held weekly on Wednesdays, 9.30am at Heyford and Thursdays, 10am at Flore, except in Holy week – 4th and 5th – all welcome.

The service pattern is rather different this month because of Holy Week and Easter. On Palm Sunday we shall have our traditional parade with donkeys and scout band around Flore. This is for everyone in all four villages and we shall be joined by folk from the URC in Flore. We shall arrive at the Parish Church at 11am for an All-age service to celebrate Palm Sunday.

There will be one Hot Cross Bun service on Good Friday morning this year, in All Saints, Flore and another three hour vigil in Heyford church. This will be similar to last year with prayer stations set up around the church where people can meditate for as little or as long as they like; we shall conclude with a short service. If you would like any more information about any of our services please don’t hesitate to phone me.

My apologies for some confusion last month – the article on preaching was written by Jane Quarmby from Brockhall, who is training to become a Lay Reader in the benefice, not Jane Rands, who is churchwarden in Heyford. Both Janes are very valued members of the benefice, using their many skills to support the work of the church here as do many people – thanks to them all.

The Streets we shall be praying for during April are: Bugbrooke Rd and Wakefield Way in Heyford, Bliss Lane and the Nursery, Meadow Farm Close and Brington Rd in Flore, Main St in Church Stowe and Manor Farm, The Old Coach House and Manor Cottage in Brockhall.

Easter and its powerful symbols

You will see from the schedule of services that once again we have a busy Holy Week and Easter. The services are spread across all our villages and are for everyone from all the villages. This will be the fourth year that we have held a Dawn service in Flore at 6am on Easter Day – it’s becoming a bit of a local tradition and quite a popular one too. It is a service packed with symbolism. We start outside by lighting a new fire to welcome the day. I like to set fire to a Christmas tree to emphasise the link between Christmas and Easter – you can’t have one without the other. Then we take a light from the fire to light our new Paschal Candle which will have a central place in the church during the Easter season. This reminds us that Jesus is the Light of the world. On that first Good Friday people tried to put out that light as they crucified Jesus, but God raised Him to new life.

Taking the newly lit Paschal (Easter) candle into the church we all light our own nightlights and float them in the font as we renew our baptismal promises to remind ourselves that we are given that new life in Christ at our baptism. It means that even though we go on making mistakes, sinning, we can be forgiven and make a fresh start. Of course, this will only have real meaning if we really mean to amend our ways.

Then we go to the Easter Garden, remove the stone from the empty tomb, place the figures in the garden and bless it. Christ is Risen, and we rejoice together before sharing in a breakfast of bacon butties.

Later in the day there may well be Easter egg hunts in the churchyards or just Easter eggs given out after the services. The original Easter eggs were real eggs painted to make them special – very symbolic as of course the egg is very much a symbol of new life. However the hollow chocolate eggs do have an extra symbolism as they remind us of the empty tomb.

Wishing you all a very happy and blessed Easter

Apologies

Last month the Editor wrongly accredited the item on Preaching. It was written by Jane Quamby. The Editor apologises for the error and trusts that it has not caused too many difficulties.

Police Contact Procedures

Please could I ask that if my direct extension of 344275 is published in any Newsletters or placed on any Websites that it is stressed that only very non urgent messages should be left on my voicemail.

It is not possible for my messages to be checked at times when I am off duty, such as annual leave and rest days.

I have recently returned from annual leave and have had several quite urgent voicemails left that could not be responded to in a timely manner as it was not possible for anyone else to listen to my voicemails.

I am more than happy for my direct extension to be used for non urgent matters, but at times when a person is needing to report an incident or contact the Police due to finding items of property, or with an urgent enquiry, this should be done by telephoning 101 and speaking directly to the Force Control Room so that, where required, an incident can be created and Officers be deployed, and so that urgent enquiries can be responded to.

In an emergency 999 should always be used.

Parish Council Notes

The latest meeting of the Parish Council took place on March 4th at the Baptist Church Rooms.

Nick King from South Northants Volunteer Bureau introduced the Village Networks scheme which would bring (as of May) advice on benefits, debts and job seeking to the village on a regular basis in the form of a specially adapted vehicle. There would also be a minibus available at low rates for hire to charities and village organisations, to bring parishioners to the advice centre, and also to take parishioners directly to service suppliers if felt important. Mr King sought someone to act as a single point of contact to advise on locations etc.

Jubilee/Fete.  Councillor Joan Kirkbride has been asked to and has agreed to plant the Jubilee oak tree and crown the Rose Queen.

Allotments. Rent night on March 1st had yielded £998 with £310 still due. This would just cover the anticipated grass and hedge cutting and water costs. The questionnaires and meeting regarding the development of an Allotments Association had given mixed results.

Youth Club. It was reported that the initial meetings had been a great success and numbers had risen to 33. All the relevant policies had been adopted. There was liaison with the school on anti bullying schemes, and all CRB checks were in order. The Clerk was instructed to write to the organisers and to thank all concerned.

Dog Fouling.  I have been asked to reprint this recent initiative from the South Northants Council Spring Review.

If you own a dog it’s your responsibility to clean up after it if it fouls in a public place.

Dog fouling is unpleasant and poses a public health risk. You can buy your poop scoop bags from the council offices in Towcester. The bags cost £6 for 300. If you witness someone letting their dog foul in a public place without cleaning it up afterwards, please report it to the Environmental Protection Team – email environmental.protection@southnorthants.gov.uk or phone 01327 322323, with as much information as possible. If you can, tell us the name and address of the  person in charge of the dog, a description of the dog, plus details of the date, time and place of the offence. If fouling occurs at regular times, it may be possible for an officer to witness the fouling and take action accordingly. Council officers can issue £75 fixed penalty notices for dog fouling.

DATE OF NEXT MEETING. Monday April 2nd   2012 preceded by Annual Parish Meeting at 7pm – an opportunity for Village organisations to give reports, as well as to hear the chairman’s report.

Thank you for the Memories as Teaching Assistant in class 3………….

I would like to thank all the children in class 3 at the Bliss charity and their teacher Mrs Morse for making my time at School so special. The children, parents and staff made my last day full of lovely memories. Thank you to the staff for the presents cards and flowers. Also to all the children in class 3 who gave me a party to remember full of games, performances, and fun. Thanks to the parents in class 3 for their present and all the gifts from the children.

I feel blessed to have worked in such a lovely school as ours; working at Bliss is like being part of a big family. As one child in the school wrote in my leaving card, “I would like to say good luck with your life you have given me many life long memories”. I feel exactly the same; working at Bliss has been one of the happiest times in my life.

I am now moving on to a new chapter in my life as the Northamptonshire children and young people’s service manager for Guideposts Trusts. I will spend a lot of the time working with children and young people who are less fortunate than we are. Also I will have opportunities to develop existing services and hopefully make a real difference for all the families whom I meet.

In closing, it’s not “Goodbye”. I will still go into school when I have a few spare minutes to help out in class 3.

Many thanks.

Mrs Daurie

Jodie Caller

I would like to give you the details of our 15 year old daughter’s recent Judo successes.

Jodie Caller, 15, from Nether Heyford recently took part in the under 20 year old British Closed Judo Championships. Jodie is the current 52 kg Cadet (under 17) British Judo Champion and tested herself against the older and more experienced players at the event on Saturday 21st January, at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield.

In an epic day which started at 10 am and finished around 6pm, Jodie had eight fights and produced a truly amazing performance to win all eight contests and take the Gold medal and be crowned 2012 U52Kg Junior (under 20) British Closed Judo Champion,  at just 15 years old.

Not content with this, just a couple of days later Jodie fought for England at the 2012 Commonwealth Judo Championships in Cardiff. The event was held in the Donald Gordon Theatre which provided a very different setting. Another very long day saw Jodie weigh in at 6 am, fight in her first round which she won and then wait for the finals show at 6pm. In an all England final Jodie threw her team mate for the maximum score (called Ipppon) and took another Gold Medal to be crowned U52Kg Cadet Commonwealth Judo Champion.

Her next target is to qualify for the Cadet European Judo Championships in June which is being held in Montenegro and she is currently on target to secure her place, fingers crossed.

LONGEVITY RUNS IN SOME FAMILIES

Joseph Oliver Adams, farmer and public servant was born on 29th March 1862.  He lived and farmed all of his life at Bugbrooke and Heyford (Whitehall on the A5) and died in 1948.  He had 9 children although 2 did not achieve adulthood.  The sole survivor is Hugh Adams who was born in 1923 and still lives in Nether Heyford.

Joseph Oliver had an uncle named John Radburne, also a farmer, who lived a 100 years and died at his home at Thrupp Grounds, Nr Daventry; this is still occupied and farmed by a member of the Adams family.  At the time of John Radburne’s 100th birthday he was known as the oldest farmer in England.  The family hope to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Oliver Adams in 2012.

Heyford Scout Group

Beavers: Before the February break the Beavers enjoyed a night walk in which a number of the star constellations were identified whilst all were warmed with a mug of hot chocolate.  The Beavers have also completed a road safety / green cross code night.  Along with the educational aspects there’s always time for plenty of fun and games.  The Beaver colony continues to be a full house and a waiting list is going to be set up soon.  If you have a young boy or girl keen to join please contact leaders.heyford_scouts@yahoo.co.uk

Looking forward to the spring the beavers will be working towards their swimming badge of which more details will be communicated to parents shortly. Sally would like to express her thanks for the continued help given in bucket loads by Lyndsey, Emily, Charlie and Steve.  ‘I couldn’t do it without you’…

Cubs: If one group wasn’t enough, Sally has now taken on the running of Cubs.  Our thanks go to Mel, Sally J, Nicky, and Helen  for their help in running the group most recently.  By the time the Prattler has been published Cubs will have had a go at cooking pancakes on our own propane cookers!  Activities planned for the coming months include a night adventure walk with torches where wellies will be a must, and hopefully swimming as well (although not on the same night as the walk – hopefully)!  With the lighter nights on their way, the cubs are looking forward to getting outdoors more.  There are spaces in the cub pack, so if there are children keen to join, please email the leaders at the email address within the Beavers section of this article.

Scouts: From now on every Scout night will be based outside whether it be rain, sun, hail or even snow.  Please ensure all children are ‘prepared’ for the prevailing conditions / forecast.
